Jazz favourites including Blue Rondo a la Turk – Dave Brubeck , Round Midnight – Thelonius Monk, Georgia on my Mind – Hoagy Carmichael and a Jazz Minuet based on a theme by JS Bach will ensure a wonderful afternoon’s entertainment.John Edwards’ music career started in Durban with classical piano studies, followed by a postgraduate degree in jazz performance and composition from the University of Kwazulu-Natal with Darius Brubeck as his supervisor. He lectured at this institution from 2004 whilst pursuing a parallel career as a professional jazz musician. A career highlight included leading a jazz quartet that won the regional round of the Old Mutual Jazz Encounters Competition. He was appointed as a jazz lecturer at Rhodes University in 2006 where he taught until 2009. During this period he performed in various contexts including the recently acclaimed ‘Baroque and Blue’ concert series. This fusion of classical music and jazz featured renowned classical flautist Helen Vosloo and was hosted by various musical societies in the Eastern and Western Cape. John has recently relocated to Port Elizabeth; in addition to teaching at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, he continues to perform regularly in the Eastern Cape region.

Hopefield Country House is situated in the fertile Sundays River Valley close to the Addo Elephant National Park, about 45 minutes drive from Port Elizabeth. Renowned for it’s old-world charm, good food and hospitality, Hopefield Country House has also played a vital part in enriching the cultural life of the Sundays River Valley. Concert highlights have included vocal recitals by soprano, Antoinette Olivier and the Nelson Mandela Opera Ensemble as well as instrumental concerts by amongst others, the Sontonga Quartet and Charl du Plessis Trio.

After every concert refreshments are served in the beautiful gardens surrounding Hopefield Country House and these have become just as much a reason to attend the soirées as the music itself. Tickets cost R 50-00 per person and includes the refreshments after the concert – a cash bar is also available.
